What is the aqiqah?
The aqiqah (also written aqiqa or aquiqa) is a prophetic Sunnah performed on the occasion of a child's birth. It consists of sacrificing one or two sheep as a sign of gratitude to Allah for the gift of that child, and distributing the meat to relatives, neighbours and people in need.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Every child is pledged by his aqiqah. It is sacrificed for him on the seventh day, his head is shaved and he is given a name.”

How many sheep for an aqiqah?
The Sunnah recommends:
- 2 sheep for a boy
- 1 sheep for a girl
It is also accepted to offer a single sheep for a boy if you cannot afford two. What matters is performing the act sincerely and in accordance with the Islamic conditions.
When should you perform your child's aqiqah?
The 7th day: the recommended time
The ideal date for the aqiqah is the 7th day after the child's birth. If that is not possible, it can be performed on the 14th or the 21st day. The Prophet ﷺ himself specified these times.
Can the aqiqah be performed after these dates?
Yes. If those times could not be met for practical or financial reasons, the aqiqah can be performed at any point until the child reaches puberty, and some scholars even allow it later than that. It is never too late to fulfill this Sunnah for your child.

Aqiqah: the questions you are asking
The aqiqah is a sunnah mu'akkadah (an emphasized Sunnah) according to the majority of scholars. It does not carry the status of an absolute obligation, but the Prophet ﷺ strongly encouraged parents to perform it and performed it himself for his grandsons al-Hassan and al-Hussein.
Yes. If the aqiqah was not performed during childhood, an adult can perform it for themselves, or their parents can still perform it. Some scholars hold that it is recommended to perform it before puberty, but there is no consensus on a strict deadline.
The Sunnah recommends shaving the newborn's hair on the 7th day, at the same time as the aqiqah, and giving in sadaqah the monetary equivalent of the weight of that hair in gold or silver. These acts are independent of one another and can be performed separately if necessary.
